HISTORY: The designs used in crewel embroidery are drawn by the Naqashi. Crewel chain stitch designs are very intricate and their application requires a great deal of skill and accuracy. The patterns are painted free hand. The Naqashi draws from the reservoir of patterns and motifs in his memory. The chosen design is first outlined in a lighter color and the spaces outlining flowers which are to be filled with color are initially painted white. After this, the flowers, birds and other motifs are painted. Details in black outline or other dark colors are painted in later. Later craftsmen use a small hand Ari is used for its embroidery, which picks up the yarn to from the design in symmetrical form.
